Solar, wind and hydrogen home - Local production of energy

Solar, wind and hydrogen home - Local production of energy, that energy is front and center now will only grow more as we move forward in this century. The human population continues to grow and the standard of living of billions of Asia is growing. Many now face the problem of thinking the energy of big words, but the real solution to future local needs. We are very simple when it comes to energy in those days. Think about it. You are reading this on your computer now. If it's a PC, you've got the energy to maintain it by pressing the button on the computer and the monitor frame. Any ideas on how to get electricity from the street and your home computer? Perhaps, but most Americans do not. Do not think twice because energy is a convenient, because it provides a comprehensive national structure, such as power grids, pipelines and so on.
Energy becomes a game of this century, and sooner rather than later. The questions are many and vary from environmental concerns to the loss of oil reserves there are many easy policy issues. Since this is much debate on how we should prepare for these changes. And 'the supporters of wind farms offshore, a giant solar power installations in the desert, more nuclear power plants, coal burning like crazy, and so on. Imagine all these large-scale approach, but in future more local when it comes to energy production. Image if you could produce all the energy you need locally. Well, the prospect of a green house, is coming soon. Home to produce energy efficiently by solar panels and a small residential wind turbines. generated electricity to drive home and maintain an efficient batteries.

Xcel will use wind, solar energy to power conventions

Both the Democratic and Republican national conventions will be powered by wind and solar energy, utility company Xcel Energy Inc. announced Monday.

The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver in August, followed by the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis in September.

Minneapolis-based Xcel, Colorado's largest utility, ranks as the country's No. 1 provider of wind power, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

Xcel said its Windsource program will provide enough power to offset the estimated 3,000 megawatt-hours that the conventions will use.

The Windsource power will come primarily from Xcel's Ponnequin Wind Facility near the Colorado-Wyoming border and from a wind farm in southwestern Minnesota. A solar installation at the DNC venue, the Pepsi Center, will generate 10 kilowatts.

ENERGY FROM THE SUN

The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar energy is the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the earth.

Solar energy can be converted into other forms of energy, such as heat and electricity. In the 1830s, the British astronomer John Herschel used a solar thermal collector box (a device that absorbs sunlight to collect heat) to cook food during an expedition to Africa. Today, people use the sun's energy for lots of things.

Solar energy can be converted to thermal (or heat) energy and used to:

*

Heat water – for use in homes, buildings, or swimming pools.
*

Heat spaces – inside greenhouses, homes, and other buildings.

Solar energy can be converted to electricity in two ways:

*

Photovoltaic (PV devices) or “solar cells” – change sunlight directly into electricity. PV systems are often used in remote locations that are not connected to the electric grid. They are also used to power watches, calculators, and lighted road signs.
* Solar Power Plants - indirectly generate electricity when the heat from solar thermal collectors is used to heat a fluid which produces steam that is used to power generator. Out of the 15 known solar electric generating units operating in the United States at the end of 2006, 10 of these are in California, and 5 in Arizona. No statistics are being collected on solar plants that produce less than 1 megawatt of electricity, so there may be smaller solar plants in a number of other states.

The major disadvantages of solar energy are:

* The amount of sunlight that arrives at the earth's surface is not constant. It depends on location, time of day, time of year, and weather conditions.
* Because the sun doesn't deliver that much energy to any one place at any one time, a large surface area is required to collect the energy at a useful rate.

Solar energy

Solar energy is energy from the Sun in the form of radiated heat and light. It drives the climate and weather and supports life on Earth. Solar energy technologies make controlled use of this energy resource.

Solar power is a synonym of solar energy or refers specifically to the conversion of sunlight into electricity by photovoltaics, concentrating solar thermal devices or various experimental technologies.

In building design, thermal mass is used to conserve heat, and daylighting techniques optimize light. Solar water heaters heat swimming pools and provide domestic hot water. In agriculture, greenhouses grow specialty crops and photovoltaic-powered pumps bring water to grazing animals. Evaporation ponds find applications in the commercial and industrial sectors where they are used to harvest salt and clean waste streams of contaminants.

Solar distillation and disinfection techniques produce potable water for millions of people worldwide. Family scale solar cookers and larger solar kitchens concentrate sunlight for cooking, drying and pasteurization. More sophisticated concentrating technologies magnify the rays of the Sun for high temperature material testing, metal smelting, and industrial chemical production. A range of prototype solar vehicles provide ground, air and sea transportation.

Solar energy projects audited

Impact on West to be analyzed

By JUDITH KOHLER
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DENVER -- The federal government is launching a broad-scale environmental analysis of solar energy projects on public land in six Western states.

The Bureau of Land Management said Thursday that it will consider whether to establish a systemwide program for large-scale solar energy projects. It will work with the Department of Energy on exploring potential environmental, economic and social impacts of the projects in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.

Rebecca Watson helped shape the BLM's first solar energy policy in 2004 as the assistant secretary for land and minerals management in the U.S. Department of the Interior. There were no applications from companies interested in developing large solar projects on federal land then, but Watson said the agency "wanted to get ahead of the curve."

Now, there are 125 applications pending for rights of way on federal land for solar projects.

"So, there's a real interest in renewable energy by utility companies," said Watson, who as an attorney in Denver represents some of those companies.

That interest exists among international companies as well as small startups, she added.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said in a written statement Thursday that renewable energy will help the country meet its energy needs.

"Expanded solar energy development is part of the solution, placing more control over energy supply in the hands of America," Kempthorne said.

The BLM will consider various alternatives in an environmental impact statement, which would amend the agency's land-use plans in the six states. A similar analysis was done in 2005 for wind energy on federal land in 11 states.

Lands that will be excluded from the solar energy review include national monuments; areas designated as wilderness or under study for the designation; wild and scenic rivers; and national historic sites.

Additional environmental analysis would be done for individual projects.

Phil Hanceford of The Wilderness Society said he welcomes the BLM review.

"We do realize that solar energy development has great potential in the Southwest in general, and not just on federal land," Hanceford said.

Some of the best spots for solar energy development in the West are near large cities, such as Las Vegas, he added.

Hanceford said he agreed with BLM's approach of determining the best areas for solar energy and where plants shouldn't be built before development starts.

Energi Surya untuk Negara Berkembang

Bram Hendrawan (Kabar Indonesia)

Sedikit listrik berhasil membuat perubahan besar. Radio dan televisi bisa masuk desa. Sekolah juga bisa buka malam hari. Desa-desa dengan panel surya mengalami perkembangan ekonomi. Demikian menurut Gosse Boxhoorn, berdasarkan pengamatannya.

Namun demikian, produksi panel surya sangat pelik.

Peliknya proses produksi mengakibatkan mahalnya panel surya.

Pasar panel surya tumbuh 40 persen tiap tahunnya.
